What Akamai is
Akamai runs one of the oldest and most widely deployed content delivery networks, with servers placed inside a very large number of access networks. Delivery is usually configured through a chain of CNAME records that end at an Akamai edge hostname, so the customer keeps its own name while Akamai resolves the closest edge.
How DNSTrace.dev detects it
Detection correlates independent public signals. A single match is reported as strong evidence; agreement between a response header and the announcing network is reported as confirmed.

What a detection proves
The hostname is delivered through Akamai, and the response was served by an Akamai edge server.
What it does not prove
Which origin Akamai forwards to, or whether the customer also uses another CDN for other paths. Akamai configurations frequently omit identifying headers entirely, so absence is not evidence of absence.
Common questions
Why does an Akamai site sometimes return no Akamai headers?
Akamai lets customers suppress its identifying headers. When they are absent, the CNAME chain and the announcing network remain the usable evidence.
What is an edgekey.net hostname?
It is the Akamai edge hostname a customer's own name is aliased to. Resolving it returns the edge server chosen for the querying resolver's location.
