What Shopify is

Shopify is a fully hosted commerce platform. Merchants do not run their own servers: the storefront, checkout, admin and asset delivery all run on Shopify's infrastructure, and a custom domain is pointed at Shopify rather than at anything the merchant operates. Shopify therefore occupies the delivery layer and the application layer at once.

How DNSTrace.dev detects it

Detection correlates independent public signals. A single match is reported as strong evidence; agreement between a response header and the announcing network is reported as confirmed.

x-shopid — The numeric identifier of the shop that served the response.
x-sorting-hat-podid — The Shopify pod the shop is assigned to.
x-shardid — The database shard serving the shop.
x-shopify-stage — Names the serving environment, and is treated as an application-layer signal.
cdn.shopify.com and Shopify.theme in markup — Theme assets and the storefront theme object referenced by the page itself.

What a detection proves

The storefront is hosted by Shopify, and the response was produced by Shopify's own infrastructure.

What it does not prove

Which theme, apps or payment providers the merchant uses, or the merchant's business identity. A shop identifier is an internal number, not an owner.

Common questions

Can a Shopify store hide that it is on Shopify?

A merchant can place a proxy in front and strip headers, but storefront markup normally still references Shopify asset hostnames, which is why DNSTrace.dev checks both.

Does Shopify use its own CDN?

Shopify fronts storefronts with its own delivery layer, so a separate CDN detection is not expected unless the merchant added one.
